Better Than Sex is about a guy1 who buys a sex bot2, custom made to look like his crush from school3. The story is about him, the bot, and his high school crush. It is set in a near-future realistic japan as is evidenced by a sentient-ish robot, cyberdrugs, and the social-cultural attitudes around robots, especially sex robots. I'd say its better than My Dystopian Robot Girlfriend, though that is pretty good too.
1: The Male Protagonist; Takamichi he's fairly quiet, not particularly confident in himself and impulsive. He has a distinctive ear flap hat I don't know that I've seen anywhere in any manga before.
2: Chihiro, a sex bot, she has some personality, she's direct, practical, obedient, she pushes the edges of the rules. Takamichi got her face using an illegal scan from his college crush.
3: Chihiro, a cybersexdrug addict nymphomaniac. She likes Takamichi as a person, and really enjoys sex with him and Chihiro(bot).
The guy's father dies, leaving him 7 million [currency], and he works hard to save up to 8 million specifically to buy a sex bot. He's out of college, unemployed. fairly par for the course for male protagonists. He has sex with Chihiro(bot) before finishing setting up the settings, setting the tone for their dynamic as the story continues; being overly assertive, unwisely so. Takamichi and Chihiro(bot) visit the red light district where they get mugged and Chihiro finds Takamichi, forcing herself on him. Theres a brief flashback showing that Chihiro had some genuine interest in Takamichi, which doesn't quite excuse her from basically kidnapping him to a love hotel (in hentai logic to be clear). Chihiro follows him home, and the two Chihiro meet. Chihiro is fine with Chihiro(bot) and Chihiro(bot) thanks Chihiro for having sex with him as he really wanted to have sex with a real woman. Everyone is fine and friends now and they have a threesome with the two Chihiro senses shared.
The scene is interrupted by a brick being thrown through the window by some anti-sexroid gang members. The three decide to live together. Chihiro(bot) does a lot of cleaning around the place, and when Chihiro isn't incredibly horny she's pretty normal. In the middle of the night Chihiro(bot) has sex with Takamichi of her own accord. He wonders if she is afraid, having noticed an amount of change in her behavior. The manga is taking a turn for the more philosophical, discussing sentience, robotic fear, robotic love. Chihiro is attacked and kidnapped by gang members, mistaking her for Chihiro(bot). They attempt to rape her and she doesn't really care. Chihiro(bot) and Takamichi find where they've taken her and rush in. In their overconfidence they get immediately taken out. The gang members mangle Chihiro(bot) a bit and sexually defile her. When the gang tries to drug Takamichi he manages to safeword Chihiro(bot) who beats the shit out of the gang members, even while in pieces. They're probably all dead.
Chihiro(bot) is extremely damaged, they only manage to repair her enough to get her away from the scene of the crime. She's burning up and a criminal, they can't get her repaired. They have a chance to save her consciousness by putting her mind into Chihiro's head, but it could seriously harm her, and it might not even work. Chihiro(bot) refuses to go through with it, but the other two want to save her. Takamichi and Chihiro(bot) have sex to see who cums first and to decide who should win the arguement. Takamichi wins, and they go through with it. The ending is a bit ambiguous, but Chihiro(?) comments on how tears are salty.
Plot-wise I think it hits just the right amount of plot to porn. If theres too much plot you end up skimming it or skipping it altogether to get to the sex scenes. if theres too much porn then it doesn't benefit from context, its less art and more just something to get off to. The sex acts themselves are hot, well rendered, and varied, though it is primarily just penetrative sex in any of the three main orifices. The art is very good as well, it feels grounded in actual space, but it isn't super intricate or complex. As for faults it doesn't have many! Except for the rapes and Chihiro(bot) biting someone's dick off. Otherwise I really really like this, it has inspired me a lot!
